Peyote Stitch

Place a stopper bead at the beginning of the weave to keep the beads on the thread.

Begin by threading a needle with a length of thread (30" is good). Place a "stopper bead" (to be removed later) on the thread end. The stopper will help you to keep your beads from sliding off the thread.




Thread on the beads of the first two rows together, beginning with the outermost bead of row 2, alternating beads from each row as shown. The thread should emerge from the outermost bead of row 1. Run a headpin through the beads of row 1 as shown—this will keep the work from twisting and will help you identify the beads of each row until the weave stabilizes a bit. The headpin will be removed after four or five rows. If the pattern is very wide, use lightweight wire (26 gauge or lighter) instead of a headpin.
